Code of Ethical Practice for Nyingma-trained Kum Nye Instructors

Instructors should comply with the principles of good, ethical practice as listed below.

Respect and Dignity

  • Respect the right, dignity, and worth of every person and treat everyone equally within the context of Kum Nye.
  • Place the well-being and safety of students as paramount.
  • Develop appropriate working relationships with students based on mutual trust and respect.

Boundaries and Conduct

  • Do not exert influence over students to obtain personal benefit or reward.
  • Do not enter into romantic or sexual relationships with current students.
  • Obtain clear consent before any physical adjustments or hands-on guidance, and respect students’ right to decline touch at any time.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding personal matters students share in class or private sessions.

Professional Standards

  • Hold up-to-date and appropriate teaching qualifications.
  • Hold appropriate insurance coverage.
  • Ensure that activities directed or advocated are appropriate for the age, maturity, experience, and ability of the individual.
  • Consistently display high standards of behavior and appearance.
  • Protect the reputation of the organization by maintaining professional appearance and conduct through all forms of communication, including social media.

Scope of Practice

  • Teach within the bounds of your training and qualifications.
  • Do not offer medical, psychological, or therapeutic advice beyond your competence.
  • Refer students to other specialists when appropriate (e.g., doctors, mental health professionals, other teachers) and cooperate fully with them in the best interests of the student.

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Clarify with students what is expected of them and what they can expect from the teacher and the class in terms of the principles of Kum Nye.
  • Encourage and guide students to accept responsibility for their own behavior and practice.
  • Always promote the positive aspects of Kum Nye, including intention, non-competitiveness, and dedication of merit.

Honoring the Lineage

  • Represent the Kum Nye teachings accurately and with integrity.
  • Honor the Nyingma lineage and the sources of these teachings.
  • Continue your own learning and practice to deepen your understanding and embody the principles you teach.
